Setting your customers, or not

Hello!

One of the questions I usually hear is about targeting.

“Should I really focus on some target customers?”

“I don’t know how to decide who I should be targeting..”

These are the questions when you don’t know who you want as your future customers.  Should you focus on a certain customer group?  Or not?

  1. focus on a certain customer group
  2. try to appeal to wider customers

When you are starting your business from scratch, it usually better to narrow down your message and try to reach specific customers.  Especially when you don’t have visible track record, no customer base, starting with small funds, it will take a long time to build your business if start with abstract end benefits and wide targeting.

When you have already some clients, repeated customers, and steady enough income, you can expand your message and try to reach wider audiences.  When your business is on going to reach the clients, you can expand your service level.

Often when clients asks if they should narrow down the targets, the business is in its infancy.  So Yes!  You should focus on your prospective customers!

Starting a small business is not only to find the market with existing needs, but also to fulfil ones own needs and wants.  Why not!

So.

When there is a market,

with your strength

and your passion are met,

you can find your real base for the targeting.
